Her most notable historic act was holding a press conference calling for Justice for her classmate, Second Lt. Richard Collins III.In 2016, she had the opportunity to speak for Rev. Jesse Jackson on the importance of voting to her peers. Her civil rights efforts led her to becoming the Maryland State NAACP Youth&amp; College Division President. As President Ferguson organized her peers across the state to advocate for HBCU funding, environmental injustices, emergency contraception on college campuses and fighting for equality for all Marylanders. Ferguson is a notable activist who held a seat on the National Board of Directors with the NAACP for Region 7 (DC, MD, VA) advocating on a wide array of issues from criminal justice to international affairs.During her journey, she worked at the Maryland State House and was selected as a CBCF (Congressional Black Caucus Foundation) Fellow with the Honorable Congressman John Conyers, Jr from Michigan's 13th Congressional District. During her tenure, she was able to bring awareness on many issues for the Congressman to co-sponsor (such as Hate Crime on College Campus Act for her classmate Second Lt. Richard Collins III. She has testified at the Maryland State House to expand the state small business reserve program, worked to provide workforce training to youth in Prince George’s County through Employ Prince George's KEYS program and sat on panels pertaining to Economic Justice.

As County Executive, Charnell Ferguson is committed to ensuring every student—regardless of zip code—has access to a world class education and every opportunity to succeed.As a youth, Charnell’s mom instilled the value of education as she balanced basketball and books. She is a graduate of Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. Highschool and attended headstart at Judith P Hoyer. Ferguson continued to pursue her education at Maryland’s First HBCU Bowie State University, where she graduated with her B.S in Business Management and Master’s in Public Administration.
